Sewer Installation – Van der Bijl Park
This project for BLOC Contractors proved to be one of the more difficult we have had to undertake with real lessons learned in sewer installation.
With site constraints, a lack of technical information, hard geotechnical conditions and heavy rain, the Rolkon team found themselves having to tough it out on a job that ended up taking 20-days instead of the planned 5!
The first drill was under a road and went relatively well and the 30m pipe was quickly installed.
The second drill was under a culvert made of Ferricrete, a hard, erosion-resistant layer of rock cemented by iron oxides. This material was not kind to the drill rigs and our rods, drill heads and reamers really took strain with a number of them breaking mid-drill.
Despite these set-backs, we succeeded in pulling through the 60m pipe and were reminded that whilst not every job goes perfectly, Rolkon always delivers and we leave no site unresolved!
Sewer Line – Dube Trade Port
In our second project for Stefanutti Stocks, Rolkon installed a sewer main at Dube Trade Port Tradezone 2 (King Shaka International Airport).
The drill length was 66m, and required the installation of a 315mm diameter sewer main under a road length of 45m.
The piloting took 3 days to complete because of the rocky soil conditions, and the team had to drill from a property adjacent to the installation site, as we had to take care not to interrupt the operations of the surrounding businesses.
The project was extremely technical in that it had to be drilled to specific levels to allow for optimal sewage flow, so preparation and design was the key focus. BLOC Contractors provided a safe chamber for the team to work in and together we were able to successfully complete this important project.
Sizela Sewer Sleeve
In this new sewer line project for BLOC Contractors, Rolkon put in the hard yards, not only testing horizontal drilling technology but the skills of the Rolkon team too!
In order to install the 400mm sewer sleeve we had to drill 30m under a main road navigating around and below a playground and a wetland area. We also faced very soft ground conditions, with the clay soil making the progress slow going. But as is the Rolkon way, the drill was completed successfully and once again, trenchless construction came out on top!
Sewer Line – Edendale, Pietermaritzburg
Railway lines, vegetable gardens and tight community living were the conditions of the site during a 2-day project in Edendale in PMB for BLOC Construction.
Before the new sewer sleeve could be installed the live line had to be decommissioned and securely blocked off. A pilot drill of 50m was then made, ensuring the grade was appropriate for the sewer flow. Once the 12m sleeve was installed the sewer line was recommissioned and the site successfully resolved – the cabbages and railway line undisturbed!
