CCTV Crossing – N3, Cato Ridge
This CCTV installation for Netronix along the N3 at Cato Ridge, began with a site survey and careful preparation of the drill plans for an estimated 73m crossing.
The extent of the drill, the extremely rocky site and the short remap crossing of 31m made this a complicated drill. But despite these challenges, the 5-day project was delivered on time, and the geological conditions add gave the Rolkon team another opportunity to learn and grow.
Fibre Installation – uMhlanga Rocks
This fibre installation project for client 123 Net in Umhlanga Rocks, was an example of how effective Horizontal Directional Drilling is in busy urban areas.
The drill took place under the busy Lagoon Drive that runs outside the Oceans Mall and The Pearls, with the rig neatly positioned between a shoe shop and a restaurant.
The drill had to do completed quickly to ensure minimal impact on business, traffic and the urban environment, but at at the same time, the team had to drill with care. In such a densely packed infrastructure environment, there are a number of services located at between 0.9 and 1.2 meters below road level and and damage to water, electrical or fibre lines would have impacted the whole of the Umhlanga Village.
Suffice to say, this job was successfully completed and Rolkon and HDD led the way!
Fibre Installation – Amanzimtoti Dunes
This Liquid Fibre project at the Amanzimtoti Pipeline Aquatic Centre was new terrain for the Rolkon team.
Commissioned by MOT Construction, the team worked in a very environmentally sensitive area, drilling under dunes, covered in indigenous mangrove-type vegetation to install 4 x 160 diameter ducts for fibre coming in from Mauritius.
The project was on a tight schedule as the completion of the landside works had to align with the arrival of the fibre ship. Thanks to a well-planned and executed project by all parties on the project team, this environmentally sensitive project was successfully delivered.
Fibre Installation – Cape Town
In this project for the Azile Group, Rolkon pulled ducting for a new fibre network in Gugulethu and Kayalitsha.
The project entailed pulling between 100 and 200m of 110mm fibre ducting each week over a number of weeks until the installation and supply of fibre to the area was fully completed.
This was our first project in Cape Town and a proud moment for the Rolkon team.
Fibre Installation – Hillcrest
Safety and accuracy were the name of the game for this Netronix fibre installation project in Hillcrest.
This drill was 31m long and 110mm in diameter and took place under the very busy Old Main Rd in Hillcrest. The drill site was located between Christians Village Mall and Hillcrest Corner Shopping Mall, which provided with very little space to maneuver. The drill terminated at a very small exit pit on the adjacent verge, so drill accuracy was paramount.
Fibre Tunnelling – Verulam
In a fibre installation project for MTelecoms, the Rolkon team focused on length and location as they drilled under the R102 in Verulam.
Given the tight location on the edge of the busy R102 and the 67m drill under the road, the focus was on getting the set-up and navigation scanning just right. The steady focus resulted in a 2-hour pilot drill, with another hour required to pull the pipe back.
Fibre Tunnelling – New Germany
Three months, 1100m drilled, 1800m moled – this is what the Rolkon team achieved on this fibre installation job for MTelecoms in a residential area in New Germany.
Working extended hours as they drilled past 450 houses in tricky tunnelling and site conditions, the Rolkon team pulled out all the stops to ensure this project was not only resolved but that it exceeded the client’s expectations. A real team effort!
