Ditch The Trench: Rethinking Underground Infrastructure Delivery

Does underground infrastructure always need an open trench? Not necessarily.

Across South Africa, there is an ongoing need to install, replace and upgrade water, sewer, stormwater, electrical and fibre infrastructure — often in increasingly congested environments where digging up roads, pavements and public spaces comes with significant disruption.

Trenchless construction provides another way.

Trenchless construction, including Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), is not new to South Africa. Yet despite its proven performance, it remains significantly underutilised, and conventional trenching remains familiar and widely used. But as our infrastructure needs grow and existing networks age, there is an increasing need to look beyond established delivery methods and consider the most appropriate solution for each project.

That means asking different questions.

  • Does the road need to be excavated?
  • Can the infrastructure be installed beneath it?
  • What disruption will construction create for traffic, businesses and communities?
  • What are the implications for the surrounding environment?
  • And are we considering the cost of the installation alone – or the value of the project as a whole?

At Rolkon, Ditch the Trench is about asking these questions before simply defaulting to conventional excavation.

It does not mean trenchless construction is the answer to every underground infrastructure project. It means recognising that there are proven alternatives and assessing where they can provide a smarter approach to delivery.

South Africa already has the technology, equipment, expertise and experience to deliver infrastructure using trenchless methods. The conversation is no longer about introducing trenchless technology. It is about expanding its role in how South Africa delivers infrastructure.
